24 Powerful Lessons From 24 Years in Recruitment: Career Clarity, Confidence & Purpose Redifined.

It hasn’t fully hit me yet – after 24 years in recruitment and four years juggling a corporate role with Her Career Coach, I’m finally stepping into this next chapter full-time. It’s one of the scariest and most liberating decisions I’ve made, but it’s also the clearest I’ve ever felt about my career. I now have so much career clarity and purpose.

Why I finally left Recruitment after 24 years.

I’ve tried to leave recruitment twice before. But the pull and the security kept calling me back. I told myself I still had more to learn before I could fully back myself and step out on my own. And maybe I did. But the truth is, I was scared. Scared of not having a guaranteed income. Scared of not knowing what to expect each day.

What Career Clarity Really Looks Like (From the Inside)

Now… everything feels different. I feel like I’ve grown up. I’ve learnt the lessons. And I’m stepping into this new chapter with open eyes and an open heart, ready to continue learning, serving, and coaching women who are at their own career crossroads, women who are ready for more, even if they’re not quite sure what that looks like yet.

These 24 lessons aren’t just reflections from my time in recruitment, they’re grounded in real conversations, lived moments and the kind of clarity that only comes from experience.

This is your reminder that evolution is allowed. Your next chapter might not look like your last one, especially when you’re standing at a career crossroads. And that’s okay – it’s often where the real magic begins.

These are the lessons I’m carrying with me into this next season.

The 24 lessons from 24 years in Recruitment

Career Clarity Starts With You: The First Career Shifts That Matter

1. Say yes before you’re ready — and trust yourself. I started in recruitment by accident, stepping into an administrative role with zero experience. What I lacked in skill, I made up for in connection, and that became my superpower. Saying yes changed everything. Courage isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about backing yourself.

2. Confidence is built through action, not waiting. Confidence doesn’t arrive before the leap; it builds because of it. I’ve seen too many women wait to feel ready. The truth? You become confident by doing the thing, even when you’re scared.

3. C-suite people are just that — people. Early in my career, I’d panic at the thought of speaking to an exec. My manager reminded me: “We all put our pants on one leg at a time.” When you stop putting others on pedestals, you show up more confidently.

4. You don’t need all the answers — you just need to get curious. No one knows everything. The most resourceful people ask better questions. Confidence grows when you stop pretending and start learning.

5. Build your reputation like it’s your most valuable asset — because it is. Reputation is built on how you treat people, how you follow through, and how you show up. It’s what speaks for you long after your title changes.

6. Learn how to meet people where they’re at. Real influence starts with understanding. Listen more. Match how others communicate. Connection builds trust.

Confidence Isn’t Given – It’s Built (one choice at a time)

7. No job title is worth sacrificing your values. I once stayed too long in a role that looked great on paper but broke me. Titles come and go. Integrity and your well-being are non-negotiable.

8. Know your strengths. Navigate your gaps. Back yourself anyway. It’s not about being great at everything; it’s about knowing where you shine, being honest about where you need support, and backing yourself regardless.

9. Always trust the red flags. Always. Your intuition is rarely wrong. If something feels off – pause. Don’t rationalise it away.

10. Ask better questions — in interviews, and on the job. The questions you ask shape what you learn and how you’re seen. Don’t shy away from the uncomfortable ones; they often lead to the greatest clarity.

11. Your resume tells a story — but it’s not your story. A resume can’t capture your resilience, grit or values. You’re not the bullet points; you’re the impact behind them. Tell your story with clarity, confidence, and authenticity.

12. Great managers don’t hoard power — they build people. The best managers I worked with weren’t threatened by your growth — they championed it. Gatekeeping, micromanaging or withholding information isn’t leadership. That’s fear dressed up as control. Great leaders know that lifting others up doesn’t dim their light.

Purpose, People and the Power of Alignment

13. Culture fit isn’t just a vibe — it’s a values match. The best cultures align with who you are, not just what looks good on paper. Ask deeper questions. Don’t settle for surface-level ‘fit.’

14. Boundaries aren’t selfish — they’re essential. Burnout isn’t a badge of honour, and it certainly doesn’t make you valuable. Boundaries are a sign of self-respect. Protect your energy and you’re well-being.

15. Feedback is a gift — even when it hurts. Feedback is information. You don’t have to agree with all of it, but don’t ignore it. Growth lives in reflection.

16. Being likable isn’t the same as being respected. Likeability won’t guarantee respect or career progression. You can be kind and collaborative without compromising your integrity. Respect comes from honouring your values, speaking up even when it’s uncomfortable, and holding your boundaries. You don’t need to be less of who you are – just stop making yourself smaller to keep the peace.

17. Own your story. Don’t shrink it to make others comfortable. Every pivot, pause, and comeback matters. Your story is your strength. Own it, proudly.

18. Your career will change — that’s not failure. It’s evolution. I’ve changed careers. I’ve changed industries. I’ve started over, more than once. It was never failure – it was growth. You’re allowed to evolve.

Your Career Isn’t Linear – and That’s the Magic

19. You’re allowed to want more. That doesn’t make you ungrateful. You can be grateful and still crave change. Wanting more means you’ve grown.

20. Listening is a superpower. The most powerful coaching moments happen in the silence. In the space. True listening, to others, to yourself – that’s where clarity lands.

21. If you don’t advocate for yourself, no one else will. Your work won’t always speak for itself. You have to own your impact and speak your truth in your own way.

22. There’s no such thing as a perfect job, but alignment changes everything. Stop chasing perfection. Chase alignment – a role that energises you, honours your values, and lets you be you. That’s what matters.

23. Purpose isn’t found in a job title. It’s felt in the work. Purpose isn’t out there waiting. It’s built in the moments, the meaning, the impact. For me, that alignment and purpose came alive when I started Her Career Coach.

24. The bravest move? Choosing you. Leaving recruitment and a stable role wasn’t easy. But staying would’ve been easy — and misaligned. The bravest move you can make in your career is to back yourself.
